Washing and ironing instructions from our fabric labels, with tips for keeping and storing the thobe.

Washing and ironing by fibre

FibreWashingIroning
Polyester and filament (most Japanese fabrics) Below 30°C No more than 110°C
Cotton and linen Below 40°C 110 to 140°C

For all fibres

  • Do not use too much washing powder, and do not use any bleach.
  • Rinse the thobe well to remove detergent residue.
  • Do not use a tumble dryer, so no pilling forms, and dry the thobe in the shade.
  • Coloured cotton fades gradually with repeated washing.

Keeping and storing

  • Hang the thobe on a hanger with wide shoulders so the shoulders keep their shape.
  • Store it clean and completely dry; damp leaves a smell and stains.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight so the colour does not fade.
  • Use a breathable fabric cover instead of a plastic bag.
  • When travelling: fold the thobe along the placket and hang it as soon as you arrive.

Care questions

Does the thobe shrink after washing?

No, except for cotton, linen, ramie, rayon and high-cotton thobes. If you have a thobe tailored from our fabric, we wash, dry and iron the fabric before cutting to avoid puckering.

Can I bring the thobe back to the branch if it needs repair?

Yes, we take the thobe for repair after collection.
